International migration, into and within the European Union, is a fundamental issue of politics and policy today. To provide comprehensive knowledge that can form a reliable basis for policy, 22 European research centres, among them universities of Oxford, Amsterdam, Lisbon and Stockholm, have established a Network of Excellence in International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion (IMISCOE).
Based on the combined skills and experience of some 400 scholars, the research centres implement an integrated, multidisciplinary, rigorously comparative research programme, with Europe as its central focus. IMISCOE is a European Commission-funded Network of Excellence within the Sixth Framework Programme.
Policy relevance
IMISCOE provides comprehensive theoretical and empirical knowledge that can form a reliable basis for policy. International migration, into and within the EU, is a fundamental issue of politics and policy today. It is set to remain so for years to come, for reasons that lie both inside and outside Europe.
This will have far-reaching consequences for the member states and for the EU as a whole: how to manage demand and supply-driven migration, how to integrate the resident immigrants, how to adapt institutional arrangements to preserve social cohesion?
Main objectives
IMISCOE formulated three main objectives:
- To build a joint research programme on migration, integration and social cohesion.
- To develop a system of training for not only the PhD students in the network, but also other stakeholders in the field.
- To develop a system of dissemination to reach a broad public, specifically policy makers and NGO's.

AUP/IMISCOE Publishing programme
AUP and IMISCOE have developed a publication programme on three levels: the online library, working papers published at the IMISCOE website and the AUP-IMISCOE Book Series, which consists of the following distinct publications:
- IMISCOE Research
- IMISCOE Dissertations
- IMISCOE Reports
- IMISCOE Textbooks
An IMISCOE editorial committee has been established to coordinate the process of reviewing all manuscripts for these series, thereby guarding the excellence of the IMISCOE network.
