Frequently Asked Questions
Amsterdam Academic Archive

Which titles will be considered for publication in this series?
Any academic and general-interest publication which is out of print and which is still in demand locally and abroad. Only Dutch- and English-language titles will be considered. It is not yet possible to reproduce in colour with Print on Demand, but black-and-white illustrations can be included.

How do I submit a title for the AAA series?
Send a copy of your book to Amsterdam University Press, care of the AAA editorial office, preferably accompanied by one or more reviews. You will be notified within four weeks whether the book will be included in the series and when it is likely to be published. The average production time of a book in the AAA series is eight to ten weeks. Alternatively, send an email to AAA-serie@aup.nl with the title and author of a book which you feel is suited to this series.

Will I get the copy of my book back?
No. AUP will scan the book, and to do so we need to unseam the book. It is important that you provide us with a clean hard copy since we need to make a photocopy of every page.

What is PoD, and how does it work?
PoD stands for ‘Printing on Demand’. In practice, this means that anyone who would like a copy of your book can simply order it via a bookstore or online. AUP ensures that the print files are available for production at various printing partners around the world. Your book will be printed to order at one of the associated presses at eleven locations worldwide, including the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and Singapore. In the Netherlands, we are working with the Centraal Boekhuis, so that your book will be available through all Dutch bookstores. The same equipment, toner and paper will be used at all locations, ensuring uniform quality of your book regardless of location.
We will be announcing the publication of your book at Centraal Boekhuis online, Amazon.com and Booksurge.com, among others. Whereas before dozens of copies of your book were stocked, nowadays bookstores and scholars order online, and the required number of copies can be printed in the right place at the right time. Without storage costs or lengthy shipping procedures, a copy arrives within days at the requested address anywhere in the world. In this way your book remains available for many years to come, easy to find and order.

Quality of PoD
In the past 15 years the technology of PoD has advanced tremendously. The quality of PoD books has improved so greatly that they cannot be easily distinguished from traditionally printed copies any longer. If you would like to test this for yourself, please order a copy of one of our PoD editions via AAA-serie@aup.nl.

Digital availability in the AUP Repository and the Open Archives Initiative
Relevant parts of your book will be placed in our repository, making the contents of your book available in the worldwide network of academic institutions through which data about scholarly documents are already being shareObviously, this digital service will greatly increase the visibility of your work. Whenever an interested party looks for your work in the AUP Repository or via its associated academic search engines, a paper edition of the book can be ordered ‘on demand’.

Marketing
Of course, your publication will be listed as a reprint in the Amsterdam University Press catalogue, which is distributed to all bookstores and relevant publications throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. In addition, English-language titles will also be announced via our regular distributors, the University of Chicago Press (US and Canada), University Presses Marketing (the UK) and Durnell Marketing (rest of Europe outside the Netherlands and Belgium). But far more interesting for the announcement and distribution of the AAA publications is the link to search engines such as Google Print and Google Scholar, and the listing on Amazon.com, which makes your work easy to obtain.

What does it cost?
Your book has to be scanned page by page, so the cost depends on the size of the original publication. The estimate is based on a cost of € 0.25 per page for blackand-white scans of text and/or line illustrations, € 2.30 for pages with black-andwhite photographs (halftone images), and € 30 per page requiring image processing. In addition, a new cover will be created for your book, which amounts to € 125. If you wish to write a new preface for this reprint (maximum of 4 pages), this will cost € 75 for the typesetting and proofs. Assuming a publication of 250 pages with new preliminary matter, including 10 pages with line illustrations and 2 pages with black- and-white photographs, and a new preface, the total cost would be € 303. Amsterdam University Press will pay the cost of uploading the files and advertising them around the world, as well as the cost of including relevant sections of the book in our repository.

Copyright
You are responsible for ensuring that you possess the copyright for a reprint of your work. Depending on the contract that you originally signed with the publisher, this should have reverted to you. In most cases, you become the copyright holder once a title goes out of print. Otherwise, you will have to ask the publisher in writing to reprint your work – if they decide against reprinting, the copyright in most cases automatically reverts back to you. For a copy of a standard letter setting this process in motion, please refer to our website www.aup.nl/AAA-serie.

Contract and royalties
Finally, we shall sign a contract with you for the reprinting of your work. A standard contract can be found on our website www.aup.nl/AAA-serie. Authors receive a net royalty of 5% on copies sold.
