Applying Shari’a in the West verschaft inzicht in drie vraagstukken: hoe praktiseren westerse moslims shari’a, met name op het terrein van familie-relaties; hoe reageren westerse juridische en politieke systemen op deze behoeften van moslims; dient aan deze behoeften wel of niet tegemoet gekomen te worden.
Applying Shari’a in the West draagt bij aan het gestaag groeiende – maar nog steeds geringe – onderzoek naar shari’a in het westen, doordat het nieuwe inzichten verschaft in de notie van shari’a in het westen, en in nieuwe benaderingen voor de studie daarvan Dit boek verschaft achtergronden bij de toenemende behoefte bij moslims in het westen om volgens de shari’a te leven: hoe uit deze behoefte zich, wat zijn de beperkingen, en zou aan die behoefte tegemoet gekomen moeten worden of juist niet. Ook verschaft het inzicht in de complexe interactie tussen moderne westerse (met name west-Europese) juridische en politieke systemen, en religieus (met name islamitisch) recht in deze samenlevingen.
