In het groeiende onderzoeksterrein blijkt over wetenschappelijk onderzoek in en naar toegepaste en podiumkunts geen consensus. Henk Borgdorff stelt dat, in tegenstelling tot wat de meeste onderzoekers lijken te denken, het unieke karakter deze kunstvormen geen unieke methodologie van onderzoek rechtvaardigt.
'Kennis van kunst', zoals belichaamd in de praktijk en de toegepaste kunst, is toegankelijk via onderzoek door middel van zowel cognitieve en artistieke middelen. De auteur legt in heldere bewoordingen uit dat we ons ten volle bewust moeten zijn van de spanning en de interactie tussen de artistieke praktijk en theoretische reflectie. Ook stelt Henk Borgdorff dat onderzoek ín de kunsten van gelijke wetenschappelijke kwaliteit en waarde behoort te zijn als onderzoek náár de kunsten, en daarom in de academische wereld als gelijkwaardig moet worden behandeld.
Dit is het eerste boek dat een poging doet een standaard op te stellen voor onderzoek naar toegepaste en podiumkunst.

Henk Borgdorff is professor of Research in the Arts at the University of the Arts, The Hague, and visiting professor of Aesthetics at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts of the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.
