A Compendium of Persian Literature in 14th-Century Tabriz
De ‘Safina’ is een groot, goed bewaard gebleven manuscript uit het 14de-eeuwse Tabriz in Perzië, het toenmalige centrum van educatie en culturele activiteiten. Met zijn 209 werken in het Perzisch en Arabisch is het een schatkamer van informatie. De teksten in het compendium toont namelijk de canon voor de wetenschapper in de islamitische wereld van toen.
De ‘Safina’ omvat tradities, ethiek, mystiek, jurisprudentie, theologie, exegese, geschiedenis, grammatica, literatuur en literatuurkritiek, filosofie, astronomie en astrologie, geomantie (een voorspelmethode), mineralogie, wiskunde, geneeskunde, muziek, kosmografie en aardrijkskunde.
Voor het eerst wordt er met ‘Safina Revealed’ een introductie gegeven op diverse aspecten van dit compendium. ‘Safina Revealed’ bevat veertien artikelen die een specifiek onderwerp uit de ‘Safina’ behandelen, en die daarbij tevens het culturele en literaire belang ervan in de 14e-eeuwse islamitische wereld toelichten.

Redacteurs
Asghar Seyed-Gohrab
Ali-Asghar Seyed-Gohrab is Professor of Persian and Iranian Studies at Utrecht University in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. He has published extensively on Persian literature, mysticism and religion. His publications range from Persian poetry to Sufism and the role of religious and mystical motifs and metaphors in Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988) and how peaceful religious injunctions are used to justify violence. At the moment he is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the ERC-Advanced Grant entitled Beyond Sharia: The Role of Sufism in Shaping Islam , examining Islamic nonconformist movements.
