Feminism and the Making of the Built Environment

Feminism and the Making of the Built Environment

JVG: Journal of Gender and Women’s History 44 (2026)

Feminism and the Making of the Built Environment aims to investigate the many ways feminist ideas and practices have shaped and transformed architecture, urban planning, and the very production of space.

Building upon recent initiatives aimed at the recovery of forgotten women architects and their work, the book asks how feminist approaches have changed the ways the built environment is imagined, designed, and remembered. Drawing on archival research, biographies, institutional histories, visual manifestos, oral histories, and contemporary activism, the contributions highlight forms of architectural agency that often existed beyond conventional professional structures. The contributors also confront the institutional and historiographical mechanisms that have rendered feminist contributions invisible, and envision how archives, professional structures, and architectural canons might be reimagined.

Feminism and the Making of the Built Environment is both a genealogy of feminist spatial practices and a call to continue the work of reclaiming, rethinking, and remaking the places we live in.
