The Role of the Nat. Lab. at Philips
Het Philips Natuurkundig Laboratorium werd opgericht in 1914. De belangrijkste taak van het nieuwe laboratorium was aanvankelijk het onderzoek naar gloeilampen, het belangrijkste product van Philips, dat op dat moment geleid werd door de broers Anton en Gerard. Maar binnen korte tijd werd het Nat.Lab., zoals het laboratorium al snel werd genoemd, de voornaamste bron van nieuwe uitvindingen die het bedrijf ondersteunde in de uitbreiding van hun producten portfolio. In tachtig jaar veranderde de rol van het laboratorium, zowel binnen Philips als in een bredere nationale en internationale context.
In dit boek wordt beschreven hoe het laboratorium in de loop der jaren veranderde van een belangrijke bron van innovaties voor het bedrijf tot een leverancier van specialistische kennis voor de Product Divisies. Vandaag de dag is het Nat.Lab. onderdeel van een wereldwijde onderzoeksorganisatie, Philips Research, die mogelijkheden onderzoekt voor nieuwe en verbeterde producten en processen en die belangrijke patenten realiseert in de elektronische markt waarop Philips nog steeds actief is. Het Nat.Lab. is nog steeds een van ’s werelds grootste particuliere onderzoeksorganisaties.

Marc J. de Vries is universitair docent techniekfilosofie aan de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven en bijzonder hoogleraar reformatorische wijsbegeerte aan de Technische Universiteit Delft. Van 1997 tot 2000 werkte hij voor de Stichting Historie der Techniek aan het onderzoek dat tot dit boek leidde. Opdrachtgever voor het onderzoek was Philips Research.
