Transities in kunst, cultuur en politiek
Transitions in Art, Culture and Politics
This volume focusses on the role of art, culture and politics in transitions and the struggle for social justice. Sometimes these transitions are traumatic and violent processes as in the case of post-apartheid South Africa. In other cases, as in Europe, they involve long-standing histories that are multi-directionally linked to colonialism, holocaust and totalitarianism. The authors explore intersectional issues of transition and social change in conjunction with broader debates on the role of democracy, citizenship and human rights. In doing so, they engage with the work of feminist scholar Rosemarie Buikema.
Editors
Sandra Ponzanesi
Sandra Ponzanesi is Professor of Media, Gender and Postcolonial Studies at the Department of Media and Culture Studies, Utrecht University, Netherlands. She has published widely in the fields of media, postcolonial studies, digital migration and postcolonial cinema with a particular focus on postcolonial Europe from comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives. She is currently PI of the NWO Project VREM “Virtual Reality as Empathy Machine: Media, Migration and the Humanitarian Predicament”. Among her publications are: Paradoxes of Postcolonial Culture (Suny, 2004), The Postcolonial Cultural Industry (Palgrave, 2014) and Gender, Globalisation and Violence (Routledge, 2014). She has co-edited among other Postcolonial Cinema Studies (Routledge, 2012), Postcolonial Transitions in Europe (Rowman and Littlefield, 2016), Postcolonial Intellectuals in Europe (Rowman and Littlefield, 2018) and Postcolonial Publics: Art and Citizen Media in Europe (Edizioni Ca’ Foscari, 2023). Kathrin Thiele
Kathrin Thiele is Universitair Hoofddocent in Gender Studies en Critical Theory binnen het Graduate Gender Programme aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Haar queer feministisch onderzoek concentreert zich centraal op vraagstukken rond on/gelijkheid, de/kolonialiteit, ecologie en post/humanismes; met kritische aandacht voor de verontrustende gevolgen van een relationeel wereldbeeld. Thiele coördineert het platform Terra Critica: Interdisciplinary Network for the Critical Humanities, wat zij in 2012 oprichtte; en zij is tevens initiatiefnemer van het Relational Matters Archive, een archief over plurivocale inzichten in hoe relationaliteit, als een ‘matter of concern’, ons kan helpen met en in de huidige planetaire conditie.
Domitilla Olivieri
Domitilla (Domi) Olivieri is antropoloog, activist, docent en onderzoeker. Olivieri werkt als Universitair Docent in het Graduate Gender Programme in het Departement Media en Culture Studies aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Olivieri’s meest recente publicaties zijn: “In the Spiral of Time. Conversation with Trinh. T. Minh-ha” voor Transnational Screens (2022); en “Slowness as a mode of attention and resistance: playing with time in documentary cinema and contesting the rhythms of the neoliberal university” in Contention (2022). Olivieri’s projecten focussen op documentaire films, tijd en ruimtes van het alledaagse, vormen van sociale en politieke relationaliteit en dispuut, activistische interventies in de neoliberale academie, en ritmes in (documentaire) media.
Eva Midden
Eva Midden is Universitair Docent Gender Studies, bij het Departement Media en Cultuurstudies, aan de Universiteit Utrecht. Midden's meest recente onderzoek gaat over liefde, monogamie, en on/trouw. Haar bredere onderzoek interesses zijn onder andere: feministische theorie, intersectionaliteit, postsecularisme, nationale identiteit, bekering en agency. Recente publicaties zijn bijvoorbeeld “Becoming Muslim: Converting Old and New Practices through Turning Away” in de European Journal for Women’s Studies (2022) en “Among New Believers: Religion, Gender and National Identity in the Netherlands” in het boek Religion, Secularism and Political Belonging van Leerom Medovoi en Elizabeth Bentley (2021).
Trude Oorschot
Trude Oorschot is afgestudeerd in de Nederlandse Taal- en Letterkunde en is coördinator van de Nederlandse Onderzoekschool voor Gender Studies (NOG). In die hoedanigheid coördineert ze het landelijke curriculum voor promovendi en Research Master studenten. Verder ondersteunt ze de directeur, het schoolbestuur en de curriculum commissie bij organisatorische en beleidsmatige zaken. Daarnaast ondersteunt ze het Graduate Gender Programme (GGeP) aan de Universiteit Utrecht. GGeP is verantwoordelijk voor twee minors, de Master Gender Studies, de Research Master Gender Studies en de Erasmus Mundus Master in Gender and Women’s Studies GEMMA.
