Let’s start with the basics. What is Open Access?
When a book, journal article, map or illustration is published in Open Access it means that it is free and available to any user without any barriers for access. A fee is paid, usually by an institution, funder or university to the publisher to cover the publishing costs and ensure that the content is easily accessible to anyone with access to the Internet.
It also means that the content is published under an Open Access license, which, depending on the type of license, gives the user certain rights to re-use your text.
Why publish in Open Access?
There are many reasons to publish your article, journal or conference proceedings in Open Access.
- On average, OA content is downloaded 20 times more often than pay-walled content
- OA content is, therefore, cited more often than content that is not OA
- The visibility and impact of your work increases
- Publishing in OA is often required for compliance with funders
